Despite planning to eat healthy food this time I somehow ended up having a bacon egg and pancakes on the side breakfast, which was mediocre and not as enjoyable as a big bowl of fruit with oatmeal would have been. I do this every time and should know better, but hey, I'm on holiday and not going to beat myself up over it.
Instead I bought myself a 'Speck' case for my MacBook in Best Buy when we stopped to have a browse and pick up a few treats using the excuse of needing another car adapter plug for charging phones etc in the car.
Next stop Walmart for water, snacks, cold relief potions and anything else that took our fancy while there. I am now nursing a delightful cold, courtesy of Jordan and half the passengers on the flight over here. I love wandering around looking at weird and wonderful items such as hair mayonnaise - mebbies a cousin of the Kinky Curl Custard from the previous post? Who knew hair products were edible!
Back in the car, sat nav primed, Back Seat Boys playing FIFA on phones we set off once more to the east coast and the second of four hotels we will be staying in this trip. The sat nav took us along a quiet road through backwater villages and the occasional town, none of which we particularly wanted to stop at due to dubious looking 'homey' types malingering at the roadside.
The day started sunny and warm, but as we drove East, an ominous black storm cloud appeared. We felt like storm chasers, driving into the blackness, lightning flashing across the sky, wipers going like the clappers. Nothing like driving through a good American storm.
The plan had been to have a wander around St. Augustine while waiting to check in the hotel, but to avoid the rain we decided to go to the mall instead. Yes, we like shopping. Since I was the only one to pack more than 2 days of clothes the boys all wanted to get shorts, trainers and T shirts so off to the outlets for Nike, Adidas etc while headed to Fossil for a browse at the handbags and jewellery. Needless to say we all came away with a few things.
When we visited St.Augustine before we stayed in a lovely hotel right in the historic district, but this time hubby had spotted another great deal and booked us into The Jaybird Hotel. A little out of the way but had recently been renovated and was now a bit of a boutique kind of hotel. £60 a night with breakfast.
I love these little coffee makers they seem to have in the rooms these days. One cup with a little coffee bag on a tray that you slot into the machine. So much easier than those old glass jug ones that dripped everywhere. Only thing that would have improved the room would have been some nicer toiletries, Aveda would have been perfect.
Ate at the hotel restaurant as we were all pretty weary and the thought of traipsing into the centre of town to eat was more than we could bear. The food was ok, nothing fantastic, chicken salad, steak, burgers etc. have to say the best thing was the cold Bud Lite. I don't usually drink lager on its own without lime, but Bud Lite in the U.S. Is lovely. It's not the same at home. My other observation was that Americans really don't know what to do with vegetables, generally speaking. Hubby was presented with a 'side' of vegetables....a dish of soggy spring cabbage. I like cabbage, but this looked like it had been around a while, I couldn't think of anything less appetising. They seem to treat vegetables as something they have to serve but grudge doing so. I had a 'medley of seasonal vegetables' once that resembled well stewed veg you'd get in a casserole. Awful, but they do make fantastic salads.
Bellies full, we rolled into the room, plugged in all the gadgetry, showered and climbed into bed. We were all fast asleep by 9.15pm. Exhausted. This holiday lark is no fun at all.
