History in the Sand

I am always in awe of the power of the sea. You never know what surprises it has in store as you walk along the beach.  Yesterday, after what must have been some pretty heavy tides through the week I saw this.

Sometimes the tank traps higher up the beach are visible, or just the very tops of them.  This time they are all fully exposed to show what the enemy would have faced had they tried to invade the Northumberland beaches.

Blyth was a submarine base during the war, and having so many long, exposed stretches of beaches meant they were ideal places to creep in unnoticed.

In this photo you can see the amount of sand that had been washed away - normally this is a sloping beach - you can see the 3ft high bank that had been left behind.
and then you find this...

 Anyone for a crab breakfast?
